The study asserts that human brains apply an algorithm known as a Kalman filter when tracking an object’s position, which helps the brain process less than perfect visual signals, such as when objects move to the periphery of our visual field where acuity is low. Researchers at the University led by professor Chunlei Guo have devised a way, by carving intricate patterns in silicon with extremely short, high-powered laser bursts, to transport liquid uphill on a silicon chip without a pump. The discovery could contribute to the design of elegant and effective systems to cool computer chips, which are made of silicon. A three color 'white light' laser passes through blocks of gradient index optical polymer. In a gradient index material the index of refraction is spatially varying, so for each of the blocks the index of refraction is higher on one side than it is on the other. Light passing through the block will bend towards the side with the larger index of refraction. These suspended PCLC flakes reflect light at different wavelengths in the visible spectrum depending on the angle at which they are illuminated and viewed. This temperature-insensitive combination could be used to visualize airflow patterns over a surface, such as the wing of an aircraft. // photo by J. Bucht is using CPA to make a novel laser that will be used for laser-plasma amplifiers.
